Eco-Event International Compost Awareness Week May 3 - 9 2020 Theme : For the Love of the Earth; soil loves compost This is the largest and most intensive education initiative of the compost industry - it began in Canada in 1995 but now reaches around the planet, raising awareness about the benefits of all types of composting. Compost improves the nutrients available in soil, increases loam which is responsible for retaining moisture and reducing watering needs. Composting is a good tool for carbon sequestering and reduces the amount of organics filling up the landfills. When organics head to the landfill, they mix with all kinds of other materials and become dangerous because the liquids released (leachates) cause all kinds of water and land pollution issues. The gases released can explode and often result in landfill fires, endangering workers. With up to 30-60% organic material in the landfill, we could make that landfill last a lot longer by diverting that organ...

World Soil Day  I can just hear the eyeballs rolling of our regular readers... "Here she goes" they must be thinking... because I have a huge passion for building healthy soil through composting organic matter. World Soil Day was set aside to help us raise awareness about soil pollution, remediation and composting of organics. Setting up a home-based and office-based compost system is fairly easy now-a-days. There are even condo and apartment units that plug in and dehydrate the organic matter into a dry powder that you can then spread on a lawn, around a tree, place in the plant pots on your deck, or give to a gardener. Buy Now Organics in the landfill are responsible for more toxic leachate, more air pollution than vehicles. Buy Nothing Day  Did you know that Buy Nothing Day was founded by a Canadian artist based in Vancouver back in 1992... it is now an internationally celebrated awareness day, with it's own website:  BuyNothingDay.org It challenges us to evaluate shopping and spending habits, to reduce consumerism, increase the ability to "make-do" and avoid trips to the grocery store, or corner store... So, no sudden dashes for ice cream treats or to buy gas.  Buy Now Some participants will go the extra mile and avoid driving, turning on unnecessary lights, cutting up plastic cards, using a computer or TV or phone... just for the day. National Recycling Week is coming up tomorrow, November 11th - this day was set aside in Australia to help promote curb-side, industrial and community recycling initiatives and to provide individuals with the tools to minimize waste. Throughout the week Australians can find farm and eco-tours, waste management facility tours, recycling information pop-up stands and reuse of items formally destined for the waste bin.
