Poetry Time
This monthly series began more than a decade ago in an effort to encourage the joys of poetry. Here we celebrate other poet's work, as well as our own. If you would like to submit, simply visit the ABOUT page for guidelines & contact information.
Mom’s Poem
I know the motion of the ocean
And the size of the waves
I step high
And step out
With pride in my stride.
I know where it’s at
And how to get it.
I know what’s what.
What’s important and what isn’t.
I don’t sweat the small stuff
And EVERYTHING is small stuff.
When I get into something
I really get my teeth into it.
I hang on by the skin of my teeth
And if I fall I always land on my feet.
As for me – I always serve myself
'…Back from the land of fear of God.
Instead I respect whatever gods may be
They say God never sleeps,
That he walks among us unseen
Trouble me not with spirits
That is all I need –
A god turned into a ghost gone mad
From lack of sleep and
Walking among us, seeing not us,
But following his mad waking dreams.'
I direct whatever spirit may be in me to join the stars.
I would like to hear the songs
That the stars sing…
Even if any ears are long dust.
…Perhaps the stars are not for me
The earth – and that is all.
And what a good thing –
To feed the plants that
Feed the living
If that is all…
...that is enough for me.

*During one of the long phone conversations with my mother in the summer of ‘09, a season before her suicide, she was expressing her thoughts on her life and her preparations for impending death.
As you probably noticed, during this discussion she was using metaphors and stories expressed in many cultural legends, ancient writings and historical moments.
I was mesmerized by the conversation and was taking brief notes that I put together and sent her a week or so later.
She really enjoyed this piece; I hope you do too.
