Have you heard of the "International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict Day" ?  Well... it is today.  Yeah, that is a really, really, really long title for this international awareness day. Basically, it brings awareness to how conflict affects the health of the environment and increases earnest interest to finding peaceful conflict resolution.  So much conflict has arisen throughout the history of mankind over resources from grazing land, to water access... from diamond and mineral mining ...to strategic dominion locations.  In the name of war - forests have been decimated, natural areas defoliated, soils have been poisoned, animals slaughtered and water tainted... all in an effort to gain advantage in war.  The UN recognized this as a very important day to set aside to raise awareness and made it official back in 2001. Check out the events that might be happening in your area, as scientists, journalists...

-- Conscious Holiday Tips & Ideas -- As promised, I'll continue to offer wonderful eco-conscious gift and celebration options for you to consider over the holidays. A living Xmas tree that eventually grows too big can be planted in your own yard where it will provide privacy, shade and soil erosion control. Alternatively, donate to individuals with enough land for a tree. Try asking the city, school...

Today marks a very special week-long event...  Animal Shelter Appreciation Week This is a great time for the community to recognize and celebrate local pet and wildlife rescue centres, animal shelters, pet adoption outlets, wildlife reserves and yes... even the by-law officer who has to deal with stray and abandoned animals too. All of the individuals who work and volunteer in these arenas should be celebrated, and thanked today! Send some flowers to the volunteers, to someone you know who is passionate about animal rescue and rehabilitation, to the workers in related industry. Send some donuts or home baked cookies instead. Drop in and deliver some supplies they may need. Donate to their fundraisers or visit their site to give a cash notation. Write a thank-you note to the various outlets in your area.
