Poetry Time Elephant Visit I woke to find a familiar weight on my chest It pressed and crushed the air from my lungs, Shredding and shattering something inside; I felt the crackle and the sharp stab in my heart. This week, we mourn the passing of our old grandma fur-baby, Duchess.  She came to us via a pet shelter where she was surrendered to, I believe, because she was not working out as a farm gate-protector... all chained up protecting the gate. She was not even 3 years old, and she met her older "sister" here, Skyla (who passed about a year ago), and Duchess stuck by my side ever since - helping with everything I did, protecting me from garden earth worms, and chasing flies, playing and rolling in the grass and showing that soft furry belly every chance she got.  She was never a very athletic dog, she just wanted to be near; she loved food and was often guilty of harvesting from the garden, however we didn't mind too much. 13 years old in one month... she didn't quite make her birthday.  Apparently the beach play was an exertion for her that her little heart said that was enough. Today marks a very special week-long event...  Animal Shelter Appreciation Week This is a great time for the community to recognize and celebrate local pet and wildlife rescue centres, animal shelters, pet adoption outlets, wildlife reserves and yes... even the by-law officer who has to deal with stray and abandoned animals too. All of the individuals who work and volunteer in these arenas should be celebrated, and thanked today! Send some flowers to the volunteers, to someone you know who is passionate about animal rescue and rehabilitation, to the workers in related industry. Send some donuts or home baked cookies instead. Drop in and deliver some supplies they may need. Donate to their fundraisers or visit their site to give a cash notation. Write a thank-you note to the various outlets in your area. One Of Us   I find it so fascinating that we have gathered enough global knowledge, some of it compiled now, ( via scientific studies, wildlife specialists, rehabilitation centers, etc.) to understand that there are incredible bonds, emotions, protectiveness, caring and kindness going on in the realm of wildlife. Take the elephant for instance, who is able to feel compassion for another less fortunate animal, and not always of the same species. I heard a lecture recently where the focus was on one band of elephants, which had a disabled and stunted member in their group. One day the group was observed leaving a watering place where there happened to be a steep cliff. The leader took some time finding a safe route, when she could have run up wherever she wanted. They all left the area slowly, much more slowly than other bands have been seen to do. As they retreated the disabled one tried twice to climb the same route picked out by the leader, but she just couldn’t do it...

We initially touched base back in July around the 20 th and we ended up picking up the Pullypup Hands Free Walking and Running Dog Leash at the US border on August 3 rd , where we use a US postal service for Amazon.com orders. The product arrived in a (11” wide X 14” long) yellow bubble envelope. The product was housed in a clear plastic bag, along with a paperboard label folded in half and stapled across the top of the bag. I used a staple remover tool to separate to paperboard from the plastic so that both were able to go into our local recycling stream.
