Small Things Have Big Impact

-- Quote of the Day -- “ We were really astonished to see how many books …that are not printed on recycled paper, and for us – that was something we were not really willing to do. …I’m hoping that more book publishers and authors will do more to take a stand and not cut down virgin trees to produce their books. ” ~ Corey Colwell-Lipson Oct 15, 2009 I really enjoy this quote of the day because it highlights that everyday simple things that can make the largest impact. Eco Roof Technology

-- Eco Sky Roof -- Source: www.japanfs.org The Seven Ryoju Estate Group Companies, including Ryoju Estate Co. of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries group, recently announced that they have developed a rooftop unit called the "Eco Sky Roof," which combines photovoltaic generation and solar heat recovery, in cooperation with OM Solar Co., and will start selling it from the middle of October 2009. The product combines a tandem solar panel and solar system, which secures an air-flow path between the solar panel and the roof surface. Using the flow air, it recovers heat from the solar panel side, generating electricity and hot air. By recovering the heat, it can then be used for household heating and hot water supply. The rise of temperature at the back of the solar panel is limited, and generating efficiency is likely to be reduced very little. Considering that the use of solar heat at the installation space for the solar energy generation unit, which has an output of three kilowatts, t...

Lots going on today!!

-- Quote of the Day -- “…Fostering is a wonderful thing to do, I highly encourage it to anyone who has time or patience. …Generally the organization you are fostering for will pay for medical costs but food and toys and whatever else the dog (or cat) might need will be up to you. …Fostering is a huge help to shelters, and there are different organizations one can foster for. …Knowing the general breed characteristics is helpful, but if you are a person that doesn’t care what breed you foster a local shelter is a good idea. And each organization will have training programs too.” ~ Kyla Duffy Oct 1, 2009 Today's qoute was chosen to help highlight today's featured guest on Authors Read and the concept of adopting, rescueing and fostering animals. This quote was taken from a Conscious Discussions Talk Radio interview with Kyla Duffy that aired on Oct 1, 2009 - on the The Happy Tails Animal Rescue show. Celebrations all day Saturday

-- Conscious Celebrations -- Today is a busy one for most of us because of the incredible conscious celebrations happening across the globe. During Make A Difference Day we can look at some of the older posts I've done recently on homeless, peace and poverty, or perhaps the challenge I put forth to our blog readers earlier this week. According to the USA Weekend site (www.usaweekend.com) " Make a Difference Day is the most emcompasing national day of helping others --A celebration of neighbors helping neighbors ." Being Saturday we might be able to find a few precious moments to go through a closet, a cupboard or perhaps a couple storage boxes to see what we have stored away that others could benefit from today. If you don't have the time for deliveries consider hiring a local delivery, haul-it, or handy-man company to take the load of materials to the designated sites. Consider missions for the poor, churches that offer thrift shops or meals, women's support cen...

contests - events - & more

-- Quote of the Day -- “…Well I was diagnosed with prostrate cancer 7 years ago and following the surgery; I realized that this would be something I would be living with forever – this is an indeterminate prognosis and you never know when the treatment you are undergoing will no longer work. And for a while I got into a tremendous funk and just didn’t know how to get out of it. So one day I went to a party and met someone with had a partner in hospice care who had a stroke and had difficulty speaking. …I felt compelled to go – I was surprised to find that it was a happy environment, people were happy! – And there were 27 people there dying, but there was something going on there, it was just so uplifting. As I sat with the partner consulting him on what the staff can do, I saw these people walking from bed to bed; they weren’t wearing uniforms, just street clothes. And they had this incredible look of peace on their faces. I asked who those people were and they said that they were volu...

Positive News of the Day :)

-- Quote of the Day -- “Without passion, you don’t have energy – without energy you have nothing. Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.” ~ Donald Trump -- Blog Action Day -- In celebration of Blog Action Day (Oct 15) the 350.org and Brighter Planet organizations have put out a call to green bloggers to help spread the word about their upcoming initiatives. Blog Action Day . In honor of this I have selected this excerpt from the announcement for their latest initiative: " Leaders... are not planning to do enough to to avert the climate crisis. But we can change that -- with one number, and one day. The number is 350, and it's now the most important number on the planet. 350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, measured in parts per million. Since we're at 390 ppm now, it's a tough number, and getting back to it will require remarkable efforts. The good news is that peopl...

Green Resources & Events

-- Eco-Event -- Recycling Council of Alberta - 2009 Waste Reduction Conference When: Oct 14-16 Location: Calgary AB Info: www.recycle.ab.ca -- Recycling in Canada (2004) -- *Source: Recycling Product News Magazine - www.baumpub.com Statistics Canada’s 2004 Census numbers show that across the country about 27 % of waste is recycled – about 112 kilograms per capita. British Columbia has always been a leader in Canada – the 2004 Census found that 37.7 % of waste was diverted in B.C. The largest city in BC, Vancouver reached more than 50 % diversion from the landfill through waste reduction efforts. I would love to see a new Census with recent recycling numbers and compare them to these 2004 waste diversion rates, as I'm certain that the numbers have climbed in the last 5 years with a lot more items accepted in the recycling stream now. -- Recommended Resources -- http://www.promotionalcodes.org.uk/frugal-blog - a frugal living blog http://blog.industrialgreenchem.com - a professiona...

Food, Business Savvy Tips & Friendly Challenges

-- Quote of the Day -- “ My relationship, for years, was making it very difficult to have peace in my life and that is what lead me to this direction. …I have tried a lot of extremes and found they did not make me happy. My relationship with food was very significant; if I was not running away from it and not feeling well, I was thinking about food all the time - but most of all these things kept me from living in the present. We are a part of nature and keeping a balance is the key. …So I started looking at myself as a part of nature. …Food is almost a work of art as well as science. ” ~ Myra Lewin - Sept 8, 2009 With the feasting and celebrating over the Thanksgiving season, I felt this quote was an appropriate choice for today's posting here on this blog. Myra Lewin appeared as a featured guest on the Conscious Discussions Talk Radio program and we discussed the concept of having a Wholesome Relationship With Food - learning how to feel which food is good for you at that mome...

Just One, then...

-- Quote of the Day -- “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one.” ~ Mother Teresa This featured quote can be applied to one's life in a thousand ways, but it really boils down to starting where you are, with what you have and playing a proactive role in creating a healthier planet. It doesn't have to be a lot - Here's a small example of some of the little things we have done over the last few weeks: We took our excess magazines, local maps (and some bookmarks) to the busiest laundromat in our city. We shared several bags of eggplant, peppers, cabbage, lettuce, herbs and tomatoes to a variety of friends and co-workers. We have more than 90 pie-pumpkins (exceptional for pies and soups/curries, etc), of which we will only need about 30 at most, so we'll be sharing most of the harvest with a few friends and the Whispers of Hope Mission (which feeds the hungry) or the church around the corner from us that often holds feasts for the underprivilaged and working ...
