I had the opportunity to re-visit an interview I was invited to do on the Small Talk Podcast and while listening to it again I discovered this important example below that demonstrates how easy it is to make a difference and benefit financially too.
“Just like our book titled subtitle says: it is so easy to be green - it really, really is! Start with this household or business project - assign it to someone in your business especially during a slow time - get them to research everything that's going on in your community in regards to take-back programs, recycle facilities, browse for updates to the city recycling information, and learn about all the things that are recyclable, or returnable in your area.
Every area is going to be different based on location and variety of other things and so find out what you can do with the waste that you produce. Maximizing on what is already available to you. Then look at other things like just changing out your light bulbs to more efficient ones, or reduce standby power and you can save a bunch of money.
Every outside wall, every exterior wall, is going to have a variety of outlets whether it's a phone plug, a jack for the TV, an outlet to plug into, or a light switch. These will be on both sides of the wall. Walk around and make a note
of how many, and what kind is: a plug-in, a light switch – whatever.
Go to the local Home Hardware, or other local home supply store, and ask for the foam inserts that are already pre-cut for the different types of outlets. They're super cheap – few dollars for a pack of six, but the pack of 12 is a better price.
Get a little flat screwdriver - it's all you need - and take one outlet cover off at a time. Insert the foam insulation pad and put the coer right back on using the same screws.
In older homes, you can save as much as 15 % of your annual heating and cooling costs. 15 % for the lifetime of that house - by doing that one thing around your home & what did it cost you? A few dollars and an hour of your time. Tenants in apartments or rental properties will also benefit from this simple upgrade because it affects the budget immediately.”
